Pride season is underway across the Washington region, with LGBTQ communities and allies marking the beginning of the month through a mix of athletic events, cultural performances, and outdoor celebrations.
Running and gathering
The D.C. Front Runners held their 14th annual 5K Pride Run at Congressional Cemetery on Saturday, June 6, bringing runners together for the traditional kickoff to the season. The same day, Fairfax City Pride took place at the Sherwood Center in Fairfax, Virginia, offering another gathering space for the local LGBTQ community and supporters.
Music and performance
The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington brought live entertainment to the Lincoln Theatre over the weekend with "Soul Divas," a show celebrating iconic female vocalists. The performance featured beloved songs from Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, and Whitney Houston, drawing on a tradition of LGBTQ audiences honoring these cultural touchstones.
Looking ahead
Earlier in May, Project GLOW, D.C.'s electronic music festival held on the RFK Stadium grounds, included an LGBTQ-focused Secret Garden stage as part of its May 30-31 run. With Pride month in full swing, more events are expected across the region throughout June, continuing a long tradition of celebration, visibility, and community connection that marks the season each year.
