What Happened in King George County
Vindman, a swing-district Democrat representing Virginia's 7th District, showed up to rally the party faithful in King George County, a heavily Republican pocket at the eastern edge of his district. The meeting turned tense when a transgender woman asked him to reconcile his professed support for LGBTQ people with his vote for H.R. 2616.
How can you one week say, 'Hey, they're important to our community,' and then the next week, vote to out kids?
Vindman said he backed the bill because he believes parents deserve to be involved in decisions about their kids, framing his vote as a matter of personal principle rather than politics, even as he acknowledged Republicans engineered the vote to put Democrats like him on the spot ahead of the midterms. Trans attendees pushed back hard, telling him that for some students, a supportive teacher is the only safe adult in their life, and that forcing a disclosure to unsupportive parents could put kids at real risk.
