TMZ reported on September 14 that multiple sources "connected to the case and with direct knowledge" believe Panettiere bought the pill, along with other drugs, from a longtime dealer, and took several substances during a flight from Los Angeles to South Carolina before her death. Panettiere's team quickly contradicted the widely circulated claim.
As reported yesterday by the Greenville County Coroner's Office, Hayden's death remains under investigation pending the completion of toxicology results, despite reports from some outlets stating otherwise.

Panettiere was found unresponsive on August 16 in a Greenville, South Carolina apartment where she had been temporarily staying. The 911 call referenced cardiac arrest, and EMTs reportedly performed advanced cardiac life support before she was declared deceased. Narcan, used to reverse opioid overdoses, was found at the scene. The DEA joined the investigation days later, even as Greenville police said they suspected no foul play.

TMZ drew a comparison to rapper Mac Miller, whose dealer was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison after Miller overdosed on drugs he supplied. It's not an idle comparison: fentanyl was detected in nearly half of all deaths involving oxycodone in recent federal data, and synthetic opioids now drive roughly 69 percent of overdose deaths nationwide, up from a small fraction just over a decade ago. Overdose deaths have actually declined by roughly a quarter over the past year, according to provisional federal data, a hopeful sign after two decades of a crisis. But more than 140 people still die from opioid overdoses every day, and access to treatments like methadone and buprenorphine remains scarce, reaching only about a quarter of people with opioid use disorder. Whatever toxicology ultimately shows in Panettiere's case, it sits inside a much larger, unresolved public health failure, one where a single tainted pill can kill regardless of fame or means.
The Personal Backdrop
The scrutiny around Panettiere's death has extended to her on-and-off boyfriend, who was present when she died and administered Narcan before paramedics arrived. He pleaded no contest in 2021 to physically injuring her. Panettiere wrote about that relationship in her memoir released earlier this year, the same book in which she first publicly discussed her bisexuality. For now, her family and representatives are asking the public to wait for facts rather than settle the story before the coroner does.
