Matt Lucas has told the world, for the first time, that he is autistic. The comedian and Little Britain co-creator made the disclosure live on BBC Radio 2, speaking to host Romesh Ranganathan.
What He Said On Air
"I've never, ever spoken about this publicly, but I'm autistic," Lucas told Ranganathan, before explaining how he manages the demands of a working actor's life. He described enjoying "periods of being very sociable" while performing in theatre, followed by "periods of solitude" where he prefers to write alone.
On my day off I like not to see people and give them a break from me, but just to have that recharge time is quite important to me.

Ranganathan asked whether Lucas felt he was "flitting" between recharging different batteries, sociable versus solitary, and Lucas agreed, noting that six-day theatre weeks make his one day off essential for resetting his voice and his energy.
A Career Spent In Public
Lucas built his career as one half of Little Britain with David Walliams, later co-creating Come Fly With Me and becoming a Saturday-night fixture as a former Great British Bake Off host. He is also openly gay and has spoken movingly in the past about his late partner Kevin McGee, as well as about confronting his own health after his father died suddenly at 52, the same age Lucas is now.

Autism often goes unrecognised for decades, particularly among people who learn to mask their traits to get by socially, according to NHS guidance. That pattern helps explain why a public figure as visible as Lucas could reach 52 without ever naming it. Lucas is next set to play Fagin in Matthew Bourne's staging of Oliver!, and he mentioned he's also deep into a third novel, his first written for adults, with a fourth already taking shape in his head.
