On May 31, a social media user posted a claim that without Wilson's transition, Musk would never have entered politics, purchased Twitter, or helped reshape the political landscape. Musk replied with a single word: "True." The response marked the first time Musk had directly acknowledged, in his own words, what court filings, his authorized biographer Walter Isaacson, and circumstantial evidence had long hinted at—that his daughter's gender identity and his reaction to it were central to his activist trajectory. The evidence supporting this connection predates Musk's confirmation. In 2022, Twitter suspended the Babylon Bee, a right-wing satire account, for a transphobic post about U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Rachel Levine. Musk called the CEO directly to discuss the suspension, and reportedly mused that he might need to buy Twitter. Isaacson's biography later reported that Musk's "anti-woke sentiments were partly triggered" by Wilson's transition and that he viewed Twitter as "infected" by the same mindset he blamed for his daughter's identity.Wilson's sharp pushback
Yet Wilson herself has consistently rejected this framing. In a 2025 Teen Vogue interview, she called the narrative "insane," stating bluntly that her father's rightward movement was not because of her. "That's not what that does to people," she said. Wilson has also criticized Isaacson's biography for weaponizing her identity and transition as a "villain backstory-origin" to excuse Musk's behavior, and for deadnaming her throughout the text. More recently, she told Out magazine in late May that she feels safe despite her father's public statements about her, and emphasized the importance of amplifying queer voices during a challenging political moment for LGBTQ+ rights. Ashley St. Clair, the mother of one of Musk's other children, warned in May that his social media posts about Wilson pose a safety risk, noting that his platform and following amplify threats against her whenever he mentions her.
