As some Republican-controlled states attempt to rebrand June away from Pride Month, Democratic leaders across the country are making their support unmistakable—issuing official proclamations, posting celebratory messages, and highlighting the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ equality.

Governors lead the charge

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer opened June by declaring it Pride Month and calling LGBTQ+ Michiganders part of "the fabric of our society." In her proclamation, she emphasized the need for continued education and legal protections against discrimination. She also released a video celebrating Pride and showcasing pro-LGBTQ+ legislation she has signed into law. North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein's proclamation stressed creating "a safe and supportive environment" and advocated for statewide protections that would allow LGBTQ+ individuals to work and live free of discrimination. Maine Gov. Janet Mills acknowledged the 1969 Stonewall uprising as the catalyst for modern Pride celebrations, while warning that LGBTQ+ people "still face unacceptable levels of discrimination, violence, and proposed roll-backs." In Kansas, Gov. Laura Kelly declared June 2 Gilbert Baker Day in honor of the state native who designed the original Pride flag. California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted a video with his wife celebrating the "decades and decades of resistance" that have enabled Pride, saying "the state of California stands with you." New York Gov. Kathy Hochul lit the state's landmarks in Pride colors, calling New York "the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement," while Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker vowed to keep his state "a beacon for equality."

House members join in

Out Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kansas) released a statement calling Pride Month "a celebration of the resilience, joy, and strength of LGBTQI+ Americans" and denouncing politicians attempting to roll back hard-won freedoms. She urged continued action to protect every person's right to "live openly, safely, and authentically." Many other Democratic House leaders and LGBTQ+ representatives issued similar statements of solidarity and commitment to fighting for equality.

The broader stakes

These proclamations arrive as the political divide on LGBTQ+ rights widens. While Democratic leaders are visibly affirming Pride and pledging legal protection, some Republican-led states are working to redefine June or restrict transgender medical care, youth sports participation, and LGBTQ+ content in schools. The contrast underscores how Pride Month has become a flashpoint in the broader culture war over LGBTQ+ rights and representation.
