The state of Georgia has agreed to pay $250,000 to settle a lawsuit from Gemma Skuraton, the former director of student wellness and health promotion at Georgia Southern University, who says she was fired after objecting to the school's refusal to provide free chest binders to students.

What Happened

Skuraton sued Georgia Southern and vice president Shay Little after she was fired in July 2025, according to CBS News Atlanta, which first reported the settlement. She said the trouble began when the university rejected a proposal to provide chest binders, garments that help transgender and nonbinary students bind their chests, free of charge to students. Skuraton objected to that decision, and she claims Little later accused her of fueling student protests and media attention over the issue before her firing.

Under the settlement terms, the Georgia Department of Administrative Services will pay Skuraton $144,365.36 directly, with the remaining $105,634.36 going to her attorneys' fees. Skuraton must drop the lawsuit within five days of receiving payment. Notably, the university must reclassify her termination as a voluntary resignation, remove the termination letter from her personnel file, and issue her a neutral reference letter for future job searches.

"Gemma Skuraton lost a job, but she kept her moral compass," her attorney, Artur Davis, said in a statement.

A Pattern of Erasure

Skuraton's firing didn't happen in isolation. In the year before her termination, Georgia Southern drew sustained criticism for stripping LGBTQ+ visibility from campus. Student newspaper The George-Anne reported that over just three days in April 2024, the university removed therapy groups for LGBTQIA+ students, Safe Space staff trainings, transgender medical resources, career resources, pride symbolism, and diversity statements from its website, and even took pride flags out of the campus bookstore.

That removal traced back to a University System of Georgia directive requiring a systemwide review of training materials for compliance with free-expression policy, so Georgia Southern wasn't acting entirely alone. Still, the scale and speed of the changes alarmed the community. Roughly 200 students and faculty held a sit-in that April demanding the university restore LGBTQIA+ information to its website and reinstate Safe Zone training. Boro Pride and the First City Pride Center both publicly condemned the rollback, with First City Pride Center calling itself "appalled and deeply concerned." The university has maintained there was no actual change to services, attributing the disappearance of resources to a website redesign.

A quarter-million-dollar settlement is a quiet admission that firing an employee for advocating basic gender-affirming supplies looks a lot like retaliation. Chest binders aren't a luxury item, they're a basic wellness tool, and a student wellness director doing her job shouldn't cost her a career. Georgia Southern converting her firing to a "voluntary resignation" won't erase what students and staff watched happen on that campus in 2024.
