Environmental activist drag queen Pattie Gonia is refusing to back down in her legal fight with outdoor retailer Patagonia, rejecting a settlement proposal from the company that she says would dismantle her entire advocacy operation.

The Core Conflict

Patagonia sued the performer—Wyn Wiley—in January 2026, claiming that Pattie Gonia's merchandise and trademark application infringe on the company's name and brand identity. Both names derive from the mountainous region at the southern tip of South America. The company says it spent over three years trying to negotiate with Wiley before filing the lawsuit, and that an understanding reached in 2022 should have kept Pattie Gonia from selling branded apparel or copying Patagonia's logos or fonts. When Wiley launched merchandise in late 2024 and filed for trademark protection of her own name in September 2025, Patagonia sued for $1 in damages plus legal fees.

A Stand on Sustainability Funding

In early June, Patagonia laid out three demands: withdraw trademark applications, stop using the company's logos, and cease selling Pattie Gonia-branded products. Wiley agreed to the first two but flat-out refused the third. She explained on Instagram that Patagonia's third demand goes far beyond merchandise—it would eliminate partnership deals with other brands that fund her education, advocacy, and activism work. "If I can't do partnerships as Pattie Gonia, it breaks the whole ecosystem of advocacy and community engagement," she wrote, noting that Patagonia itself relies on commercial revenue to finance environmental initiatives. "They understand this because their work is built on the exact same model."

What Happens Next

Patagonia responded publicly on social media, saying it wanted to resolve the dispute out of court and acknowledging "hurt" caused in the LGBTQ+ community. The company reiterated that it shares Wiley's environmental values and that she could continue as a performer and activist under its terms. Unmoved, Pattie Gonia posted "No deal" and demanded a full jury trial. The case highlights a tension between intellectual property protection and the funding models that grassroots activists rely on—especially when both parties claim the same environmental mission.
