President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is banning CNN, MS Now and Politico from the White House, accusing the outlets of reporting "FICTION and LIES" about his administration and warning that more networks could face the same treatment.

Trump gave little explanation beyond his Truth Social post. Pressed by reporters afterward, he offered an even shorter answer.
No reason. It's a very simple ban. I don't want them in my office. I don't want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can.

He suggested the outlets could earn their way back in if they "straighten themselves out," but named no specific standard for doing so.
The Outlets Push Back
CNN said its team remained inside the White House Friday afternoon and continued traveling with Vice President JD Vance for pool coverage. Politico said it would keep covering the administration regardless of the announcement.
We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government.

A Pattern, Not a One-Off
This isn't Trump's first attempt to punish unfriendly coverage. His administration barred the Associated Press from press events last winter over its refusal to adopt the name "Gulf of America," a ban a federal judge later ordered reversed, with litigation still ongoing. During his first term, the White House pulled CNN correspondent Jim Acosta's press credentials before a court forced their restoration.
Why It Matters
Legal experts see this as a clearer constitutional problem than fights over limited pool access. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has called similar bans "textbook viewpoint discrimination," and the Freedom of the Press Foundation has described them as a blatant First Amendment violation. Whether or not the White House actually enforces this one, it fits a broader effort by the administration to test how far it can go in punishing journalists it dislikes, and that pattern should worry anyone who depends on an independent press to hold power accountable.
