Donald Trump walked out of an NBC interview on Sunday after clashing with journalist Kristen Welker over his repeated claims that the 2020 election was rigged and that fraud is happening in California. When Welker asked him for evidence, Trump refused to provide any, instead insisting “all I have to do is look.”
The Interview Clash
The confrontation began when Trump was discussing the January 6 rioters, whom he pardoned in bulk last year. Welker noted that there is no evidence supporting his election-fraud claims, pointing out that over 60 lawsuits his campaign filed to challenge 2020 results were all withdrawn, dismissed, or ruled against. Trump responded angrily, declaring “The election was rigged! It was a dirty election!” and pivoted to alleging cheating in California, claiming the slower vote-counting process there was itself proof of wrongdoing.
When Welker pressed him to substantiate these claims, Trump grew increasingly hostile. He called her “crooked,” “stupid,” and accused the press and the network of corruption before saying “Let’s call it quits because I’ve had it!” He continued berating her as he left, touching her shoulder and storming off.
Public Reaction
Trump’s behavior drew swift criticism on social media. Political figures and commentators highlighted the disconnect between his refusal to provide concrete evidence and his aggressive dismissal of legitimate questioning. The incident underscored ongoing concerns about Trump’s approach to election claims that have been repeatedly rejected by courts and election officials.
