Madonna turned Times Square into a dance floor Thursday evening with a surprise Pride performance that drew 50,000 fans and marked her deepening partnership with gay dating app Grindr. The 15-to-18-minute show, livestreamed exclusively on the platform, kicked off Pride month with new material from her forthcoming album Confessions II while celebrating the LGBTQ+ community's enduring place in her artistic legacy.

A surprise that stole the night

At 6:30 p.m. ET, Madonna emerged onto an elevated stage at The Square, a performance venue overlooking Times Square, wearing a striking pink Dolce & Gabbana corset and thigh-high boots. Flanked by giant LED screens displaying the performance and a pink version of Grindr's logo, she was accompanied by producer Stuart Price and a team of backup dancers. The audience was a mix of devoted fans who rushed to the location after Grindr's last-minute alert and passersby who stumbled upon the spectacle.

Madonna opened with "I Feel So Free," the lead single from Confessions II, before moving into "Bring Your Love," a duet with Sabrina Carpenter, and "Love Sensation," another track from the upcoming album. She then pivoted to nostalgia, performing three songs from the 2005 Confessions on a Dance Floor: "Get Together," "I Love New York," and "Hung Up." At one point during the show, a multimedia segment displayed images from decades of Pride marches and LGBTQ+ rights protests, alongside photos of queer icons like Marsha P. Johnson, Keith Haring, and Robert Mapplethorpe, with the Pride flag lighting up The Square's screens.

An ally's message at a crucial moment

As she addressed the crowd, Madonna issued a direct call to arms. "Come on gays, girls, guys, dolls. Happy Pride," she announced, a moment that resonated sharply given the current climate for LGBTQ+ rights. In a post-event statement, the 67-year-old emphasized the historical bond between herself and the community. "The LGBTQ+ community has been with me from the beginning. We've inspired, challenged and stood by each other during both dark and joyful times. Partnering with Grindr feels like a celebration of that connection, safety in numbers."

The performance underscored Madonna's role as a longtime LGBTQ+ advocate at a time when transgender rights and Pride visibility are under increasing political attack. Her collaboration with Grindr, launched in April, has included exclusive in-app content, a limited-edition vinyl of Confessions II, and surprise appearances that blur the line between album promotion and community celebration. Confessions II arrives July 3, and Madonna is scheduled to debut a 10-minute short film featuring songs from the album at New York's Tribeca Film Festival on Friday.
