Two more major U.S. hospital systems have agreed to stop providing gender-affirming care to transgender minors and to pay the federal government to make their legal troubles go away. NYU Langone Health in New York and UPMC in Pittsburgh both announced settlements with the Department of Justice on Friday, closing out investigations into their pediatric care programs.
What the Settlements Do
Under the agreements, NYU Langone and UPMC will no longer treat trans minors with puberty blockers or hormone therapy, and both have agreed to stop performing gender-affirming surgeries on anyone under 18, even though such procedures are rare and generally limited to top surgery for older teens. Both hospitals framed the deals as damage control rather than an admission of wrongdoing. NYU Langone said the resolution protects patients, families, and staff from prolonged litigation, while UPMC said its agreement preserves patient privacy and resolves a dispute centered on billing practices.
Neither hospital's care programs will look much different day to day. Both had already suspended pediatric gender-affirming treatment while under investigation, so the settlements mostly formalize a retreat that had already happened.
